In Portuguese, the original painting is called “Pessoa e absinto”, or Pessoa and absinthe in English. Hallucinations, convulsions, fainting, dementia, and sometimes death were often associated with absinthe. Fernando Pessoa stopped drinking this strong liquor because it caused gastric problems.
